Wesleyan Africans Thriving Together (WATT)

Wesleyan Africans Thriving Together (WATT) is a peer mentorship program that was launched in the Summer of 2023. The program has matched the 13 members of the inaugural cohort of the Wesleyan African Scholars Program in one-to-one pairings with returning students from Africa. The WATT Launch & African Scholars Welcome Dinner was held at Wesleyan on September 7, 2023.

In addition to the chance to participate in various WATT events and opportunities throughout the year, mentors and mentees are also part of the International Buddy Program (IBP) as Senior Buddies and Junior Buddies and invited to engage in this companion program. WATT is coordinated by the African Scholars Student Coordinator with support and guidance from the OISA professional staff.

What makes the WATT Mentorship Program special?

Forging meaningful connections: Through one-on-one mentoring relationships, returning African students will have the opportunity to form deep connections with their mentees. By sharing their own Wesleyan experiences, offering guidance, and providing a listening ear, they can make a lasting impact on their lives

Shape success: Mentors will play a pivotal role in helping African Scholars thrive academically, socially, and culturally. Their guidance and support will help them navigate the challenges and seize the countless opportunities that Wesleyan has to offer.

Develop leadership skills: The WATT Mentorship Program is not just about supporting others—it’s also about personal growth. Mentor will refine their leadership and mentoring skills, gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, and enhance their intercultural competencies.

Expand your network: By participating in program events and workshops, students will have the chance to connect with faculty, staff, and accomplished alumni. This opens doors to exciting networking opportunities, supporting their academic and career planning.

If you are a current student who will continue your studies at the Wesleyan campus in the Fall 2024 Semester and would like to serve as a WATT Mentor, please complete this application form by Monday, June 3, 2024. Both international and domestic students who identify as African and are interested in befriending, mentoring, and supporting an incoming African Scholar are encouraged to apply!

Members of the second cohort of the African Scholars Program will be contacted by OISA staff during 2024 Summer and invited to join WATT and be paired with a mentor. For questions about WATT, please send an email to oisa@wesleyan.edu  with “WATT inquiry” in the subject line.
